Whilst our animation team were busy producing the CBeebies hit series last summer, our interactive team were delighted to get busy with a game to build - extending the Supertato brand experience beyond the TV channel and onto mobile screens via the CBeebies website and Playtime Island app. Understanding how to translate brands across across multiple platforms is a core expertise.
In Supermarket Showdown Evil Pea has the ultimate plan for supermarket domination, she has frozen the Veggies and made the Supermarket aisles an icy wasteland. Can you help Supertato slip and slide around the aisles, completing mini challenges to rescue his veggie mates and melt the Supermarket back to normality?
Through three levels featuring the fruit and vegetable aisle, the bakery aisle and the freezer aisle, our hero, Supertato, takes to a spatula or his lolly stick skis, and skids through the icy wastes smashing frozen vegetables, baked goods and ice lollies, whilst avoiding toilet rolls, toothpaste and cereal boxes. Each time, Supertato encounters one of Evil Pea's evil accomplices, he must complete a check point mini game - matching pairs, catching targets or whackamole. Play continues through the aisles until the Mini Peas and Cobs are vanquished, the aisle courses are completed, and Evil Pea has been dominated once and for all (until the next time). Finally, Supertato can rescue the whole Veggie Gang from their frozen capture.
Supermarket Showdown is another example of our work with the BBC’s IVOR engine and it’s a great example of how flexible the engine can be, with so much variety of gameplay on offer. It also demonstrates how well we understand the process of translating a linear IP into an interactive experience, with all the editorial, creative and technical challenges that entails.
